Discover Madrid
Madrid is more than a destination. It’s a city to experience.
Discover its neighbourhoods, culture, food and local way of life, and make the most of everything Madrid has to offer during your stay.
Explore the city, live like a local and make Madrid your own.
Explore Madrid
Madrid is a city to be explored on foot. Historic streets, lively squares, traditional neighbourhoods and modern areas all come together, each with its own atmosphere.
Take your time, choose a neighbourhood and discover a different side of Madrid.
Madrid de los Austrias
Step into Madrid’s history as you walk through Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Villa and the streets surrounding the Royal Palace. One of the best areas to discover the city’s historic centre.
Malasaña
Creative, alternative and full of life. Explore its independent shops, cafés and lively streets and discover one of Madrid’s most distinctive neighbourhoods.
Chueca
Cosmopolitan, open and energetic, Chueca is known for its lively squares, restaurants, shops and welcoming atmosphere.
La Latina
Narrow streets, traditional squares and plenty of terraces. La Latina is a great place to experience Madrid at a relaxed pace — especially at the weekend.
Lavapiés
One of Madrid’s most multicultural neighbourhoods, where different cultures, flavours and artistic spaces come together.
Retiro & Paseo del Prado
A different side of the city, combining green spaces, elegant streets and some of Madrid’s most important cultural landmarks. Walk through El Retiro and continue towards the Paseo del Prado and the city’s famous Art Triangle.
Madrid Tip
Don’t try to see everything at once. Madrid is best discovered slowly. Choose an area, walk without a fixed route, stop for a coffee or something to eat and use every opportunity to practise your Spanish.
Sometimes the best way to discover Madrid is simply to get a little lost.
Culture & Entertainment
In Madrid, there’s always something to see, hear or experience.
Home to some of the world’s great museums, Madrid also offers exhibitions, live music, theatre, cinema and cultural events throughout the year. Whether you love art, history, music or simply discovering something new, culture is part of everyday life in the city.
Madrid’s Art Triangle
Three of Madrid’s most important museums are located within walking distance of each other along the Paseo del Prado.
Museo del Prado
Discover masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco and many more in one of the world’s great art museums.
Museo Reina Sofía
Explore modern and contemporary Spanish art, including Picasso’s Guernica, as well as works by Dalí and Miró.
Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza
A journey through centuries of art, from the Renaissance to Impressionism, Pop Art and the 20th century.
There’s much more than museums
Madrid’s cultural life continues beyond its major museums. Discover temporary exhibitions, independent galleries, live music, theatre, cinema and cultural centres across the city.
Places such as Matadero Madrid, Conde Duque and Círculo de Bellas Artes are worth keeping on your radar while you’re here.
And don’t forget to look around: Madrid’s streets, architecture, neighbourhood festivals and local traditions are also part of its culture.
Madrid Tip
Check what’s happening while you’re here. Madrid’s cultural programme changes constantly, and many museums and cultural spaces offer free admission at certain times or special discounts.
Check their official websites before your visit — you might discover something unexpected.
Food & Drink
Food in Madrid is about much more than what you eat. It’s about meeting people, sharing a table and enjoying time together.
From traditional tapas and local markets to cafés, terraces and international cuisine, discovering Madrid through its food is also a great way to experience Spanish culture — and practise your Spanish.
Go for tapas
Going for tapas is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Madrid. Order a drink, share a few dishes and move on to another place.
Don’t worry if you don’t recognise everything on the menu — choosing, asking and ordering are all part of the experience.
Discover Madrid’s markets
Madrid’s markets are great places to discover local products and everyday life.
Visit traditional neighbourhood markets or explore gastronomic spaces such as Mercado de San Miguel, Mercado de San Antón or Mercado de San Ildefonso.
And remember: some of the most interesting markets are simply the local mercados municipales you’ll find around the city.
Try a menú del día
At lunchtime, look out for the menú del día. Many restaurants offer a set menu that usually includes a first course, a main course, dessert or coffee and a drink.
It’s an easy way to try different dishes and experience a very Spanish lunchtime tradition.
Take time for a sobremesa
In Spain, a meal doesn’t necessarily finish when the food is gone.
La sobremesa is the time spent talking and relaxing around the table after eating. There’s no need to rush — conversation is part of the meal.
Taste something typically madrileño
While you’re here, look out for some Madrid classics: bocadillo de calamares, cocido madrileño, tortilla de patatas, churros con chocolate and, depending on the season, rosquillas or buñuelos.
Madrid Tip
Don’t be afraid to order in Spanish.

Madrid like a Local
Living in Madrid is about more than knowing where to go. It’s about understanding the little things that make everyday life here different.
The longer you stay, the more you’ll find yourself adapting to Madrid’s rhythm — eating later, meeting friends for cañas, spending more time outside and discovering that there’s always time for a sobremesa.
Get used to Madrid time
Life tends to happen a little later in Madrid. Lunch is often around 2 pm, dinner can start at 9 pm or later, and the city stays lively well into the evening.
Give yourself a few days — you’ll soon get into the rhythm.
“¿Quedamos?”
You’ll hear quedar all the time. It simply means arranging to meet someone.
A coffee can become tomar algo, one drink can turn into tapas and plans don’t always need to be made weeks in advance.
Enjoy life outside
Madrid lives in its streets.
Terraces, squares and parks are part of everyday social life. When the weather is good, meeting outside for a coffee, a drink or simply a walk is often the plan.
Sundays are different
Slow down and experience a Madrid Sunday. Explore El Rastro, take a walk through El Retiro, meet friends for an aperitivo or spend a long afternoon over lunch.
Speak. Even if it’s not perfect.
The quickest way to feel part of Madrid is to use your Spanish.
Don’t worry about making mistakes. Order your coffee, ask a question, chat to someone in a shop or try a new expression you’ve heard in class.
Every conversation counts.
A little Madrid Spanish
¿Quedamos? — Shall we meet up?
Tomar algo — To go for a drink or something to eat
Una caña — A small beer
¡Qué guay! — That’s great / cool!
Me apunto — Count me in
¿Qué tal? — How’s it going?
Madrid Tip
Say yes to plans.
Some of your best memories of Madrid might begin with a simple “¿Te apuntas?”
And now you know the answer: “¡Me apunto!”
